My name is Sherri and I want to talk about my experience with voting. Often people think that voting requires people to be very intelligent and know a lot about politics. But really voting is simply about being free, having the right to say what you like and don’t like by voting.
I remember taking a graduate course from a professor who told a very moving story. She had moved here from Russia. She talked about how much of a blessing it was to be in America. Her experience in Russia was living under an authoritarian regime where soldiers escorted workers to the voting booth to make sure they voted in a certain way. If they didn’t obey the soldier’s commands, they could lose their job or get sent to another country. She was very emotional as she talked about the freedom in America, being able to vote without being told how to do it while here, we can vote for whoever we want.
It really is a blessing living here. So you should vote and make the choices on the ballot that you feel are right. And you can also make appointments to meet your legislators to voice your concerns. They don’t bite. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to voice your concerns like that.
