Putting Fingerspelling on the Map
March 26, 2016
8:30 Registration
Workshop 9:00 – 4:00 pm
Facilitated by Doug Bowen-Bailey,
Interpreter Training Consultant
MN Region 3 Low Incidence Project
Workshop Description
The TASK 12 project, in its assessment of interpreters using the EIPA, has determined that two significant factors in lower scores are the lack of appropriate fingerspelling and ineffective usage of discourse mappings. In response to that, the TASK 12 project created a series of online modules to address these issues. This workshop will share some strategies for how to more effectively use fingerspelling within the classroom, as well as to increase understanding of what discourse mapping is and how to employ it within educational discourse.
Target Audience: Interpreters and Transliterators working in educational settings.
Workshop Objectives
Successful participants will be able to:
- To identify key vocabulary items within educational discourse
- To match at least three different types of fingerspelling with the situations in which they should be used
- To list at least 5 features of discourse maps;
- To practice the use of fingerspelling and discourse mapping within a rehearsed interpretation or transliteration.
This session will be extremely interactive – using a combination of brief presentation and large and small group discussions.
