This workshop focuses on the ways that interpreters have the opportunities to work with other people, both hearing and deaf, in shaping situations that align with the value of justice and equity in the way that people interact with systems. Drawing on the chapter that Doug wrote for the book, Interpreter Education in the Digital Age: Innovation, Access, and Change, this workshop looks at what ways interpreters can better understand the dynamics of power and how that shapes communication and the work that we do.
This workshop draws not only on Doug’s work as an interpreter, but also his efforts as a community organizer and educator – particularly working on issues of racial justice and equity.
Participants will explore issues related to:
- Systems Thinking
- the dynamics of power and privilege,
- models of partnership for social change, including allyship, advocacy, and being an accomplice.
