Let’s Talk Health

LetsTalkHealthInterpreting discourse about health in medical and educational settings

Resources for Workshop Participants (Password provided with handouts)

Our nation is in the midst of a conversation about health and health care with far reaching implications.  Obesity and diabetes are on the rise.  There is a shortage of primary care physicians, and an increase in health disparities.  In the midst of this, interpreters are asked to be an important part of furthering the conversation and address concerns.  Whether at a medical appointment, in a middle school health class, or clinical rotations for a Deaf medical student, interpreters may encounter the need to be conversant in talking about health and healthcare.

This workshop is designed to build competencies for interpreters working in any of these settings through a combination of interactive processes.

Successful participants will, upon completion of the workshop, be able to:

  • Articulate the factors influencing interpreter’s choices for establishing an effective role in these settings;
  • Create a rehearsed translation related to human anatomy using a three step process;
  • Identify at least five resources for continuing professional development in these areas;
  • List 3 objectives of a physician during an history and physical interview; and
  • Dialogue with colleagues about interpretations using a framework for peer interaction.
