Competence through Creativity: Using creative exercises to improve ASL skills

This workshop will take participants through a series of creative exercises including improvisation, creating ASL poems, visual sculptures that represent emotions and games to improve eye contact and facial expression. Focus is on how the creative work leads to more effective use of ASL features: facial expression, use of classifiers, use of space, constructed action and constructed dialogue. Many of the activities are also used in the immersion program Story Blend each summer and will be adapted for this workshop.

Objectives:

  • Experience greater comfort with using the entire body when conveying a message in ASL
  • Strengthen options for voice interpretation of classifiers and non-vocabulary bases signing (gestures, facial expressions, use of space)
  • Develop understanding of communication options through physical stance, facial expression and gesture
  • Explore the creative use of ASL to communicate abstract concepts
  • Develop understanding of how a colleague’s perspective, culture and strengths can help in creating effective interpretation
