Use of space and constructed action/dialogue are two of the main features assessed in the NIC test. Competency in these areas significantly help the chances of candidates passing their exams. These skills also make for more effective interpretations in any settings. Whether in the classroom, doctor's office, or court, an effective understanding of how to use space to structure discourse and how to manage descriptions of action and dialogue is critical to an interpreter's success. This interactive workshop will provide strategies and resources for developing these skills, whether you are preparing for a certification exam or are a veteran interpreter looking for new approaches for professional development.
Participants will be able to:
-
describe the differences between ASL and English in how they describe spatial relationships
-
analyze the approaches of ASL and English in describing action and dialogue
-
list at least 3 types of perspective used in ASL
-
create rehearsed interpretations of texts with spatial features
-
identify resources for future practice, including doing independent studies for CEUs.
Costs:
-
Free to interpreters served by the NESC - Region III Low Incidence Project
